The Coalition Government has passed legislation that will make it much harder for union officials to misuse their members’ money.
Across Australia, there are 47 unions and 63 employer groups with assets worth $2.5 billion. They represent 2 million members.
In recent years, many honest workers have been badly let down by union officials who have fleeced members’ money and made deals to benefit themselves, not their members.
The Registered Organisation means unions and employer groups will now be subject to similar levels of transparency and accountability as companies.
The Government is now asking the Senate to tackle lawlessness and intimidation in the construction industry, by restoring the Australian Building and Construction Commission (abolished by Bill Shorten in 2012).
