The SAS Group will provide daily updates on the COVID-19 outbreak in Australia, including updates on Government and Department of Health announcements, travel and flight bans, and general media.

Since yesterday’s update, the Palaszczuk Government unveiled a $4 billion package to support health, jobs, households and Queensland businesses, and released a media statement on business closures and restrictions and expanded on which non-essential businesses would be required to stop operating under the new rules. The Queensland Government also announced that it was “perfectly safe” to vote in the Local Government election this weekend, and that Beenleigh Rum Distillery and Bundaberg Rum Distillery will assist in the production of hand sanitiser.

The Department of Health announced yesterday that the Government is consulting with critical parts of the medical profession this week to further expand our telehealth response and to ensure Medicare is responsive during the outbreak. The Minister for Health published the transcript for his interview with 2GB discussing COVID-19 updates.

Tanya Plibersek and Linda Burney MP today announced a Coronavirus Supplement for students who receive Youth Allowance, Austudy and Abstudy.

MEDIA STATEMENT: Labour secures stimulus changes for students
Tanya Plibersek, Shadow Minister for Education and Training and Linda Burney MP, Shadow Minister for Families and Social Services

Tanya Plibersek and Linda Burney MP announced in a joint media release that students will now be able to access the Coronavirus Supplement after Labor secured changes from the Government late last night. 230,000 full-time students who receive Youth Allowance, Austudy and Abtsudy will receive the $550 per fortnight boost to their payments.

MEDIA STATEMENT: Business closures and restrictions
Queensland Government

The Queensland Government yesterday released a media statement on business closures and restrictions. The non-essential businesses required to stop operating or operate under new restrictions are:

  • Registered and licensed clubs, licensed premises in hotels, including sporting clubs
  • Indoor gyms, fitness centres and sporting centres
  • Cinemas
  • Gambling venues including casinos, nightclubs, theatres and entertainment venues of any kind
  • Theme parks
  • A place where persons congregate for purpose of worship or fellowship including weddings, and baptisms
  • Funerals (limited to one person per 4 square metres and social distancing must be accommodated including keeping 1.5 metres between people)
  • Restaurants, cafes, fast-food outlets, food courts (restricted to take away or hotel room service)

MEDIA STATEMENT: Voters hit the polls early as Queensland continues to turn out for council elections

Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young had made it clear today that it was “perfectly safe” to vote.

The Minister said that people who were well, not self-isolating and not in quarantine should vote.


MEDIA STATEMENT: Expansion of telehealth services

Minister for Health the Hon. Grey Hunt MP announced yesterday the Government is consulting with AMA, RACGP, ACCRM, RDAA and other critical parts of the medical profession during the course of this week to further expand our telehealth response and to ensure Medicare is responsive to the challenges of COVID-19.

From today, the Government will enable all vulnerable general practitioners and other vulnerable health professionals who are currently authorised to use telehealth item numbers, to use telehealth for all consultations with all their patients.
