16 January 2020
It was an honour and pleasure, along with SAS China CEO Victoria Qiu, to represent the SAS Group at the 2020 Chinese New Year celebrations hosted by the Consul-General Dr Xu Jie & Madam Cao Ailan of the People’s Republic of China in Brisbane last night.
This Lunar New Year falls on 25 January, the year of the white rat which represents a clever, tricky and tactical animal, with a keen vision and the ability to solve problems quickly. Certainly 2020 is already shaping up to be a challenge at home and for many globally in their different life and business pursuits and it could do well to have a keen vision to navigate the year ahead.
While Australian and Chinese culture is vastly different, we have shared a long history of trade, tourism, business exchange and strong people-to-people relationships through Chinese migration and the sharing of culture in Australia.
This sharing of each other’s culture and traditions is an important part of the Australian fabric that keeps our own culture and identity strong. In celebrating the Lunar New Year with our Chinese friends, we expressed shared values around family, friends and the prosperity that we hope this new year brings to all.
I warmly thank the Consul-General in Brisbane for their hospitality, kind words and hard work in being the local bridge between our distant shores and wish everyone a happy new year in the year of the white rat.
