Political Update - Mike Baird resigns as NSW Premier; Malcolm Turnbull announces new Health Minister and minor changes to his frontbench.

New South Wales Government

The Hon. Mike Baird, Premier of New South Wales, has announced that he will be resigning as Premier and retiring from politics effective from next week.

The parliamentary wing of the New South Wales Liberal Party will hold a party-room meeting next week, at which point Mr Baird will formally step down from the role of Premier and a successor will be chosen.

Current State Treasurer, the Hon. Gladys Berejiklian, is seen as the early front-runner to replace Mr. Baird, with several other Ministers also believed to be weighing up their options.

The Premier’s full statement outlining the reasons for his decision can be found here.

Federal Government

The Prime Minister has announced a new Health Minister to replace the Hon. Sussan Ley MP, along with a few minor changes to the government frontbench.

The Hon. Greg Hunt MP has been appointed Minister for Health and Minister for Sport, following previous stints as Environment Minister and Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science.

Senator the Hon. Arthur Sinodinos, who had been the acting Health Minister following Ms Ley’s resignation, will move from the role of Cabinet Secretary into the portfolio vacated by Minister Hunt.

In other changes, West Australian MP Ken Wyatt will become Minister for Aged Care and Minister for Indigenous Health, in the process becoming Australia’s first ever Federal Indigenous Minister.

Victorian MP Michael Sukkar will move from the backbench to become Assistant Minister to Treasurer Scott Morrison.
