Federal Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane has announced further reforms to the Vocational Education & Training sector.

A new Australian Apprenticeships Network will start in July 2015 to re-focus services for businesses and apprentices - providing better advice, job-matching and mentoring to lift apprentice commencements and completions.

New Youth Streams under the Industry Skills Fund will encourage SMEs to hire unemployed 18-24 year olds with funding support for up-to 26 weeks.  Seven and a half thousand scholarships will also be on offer in specific regional areas of high youth unemployment.

The sector regulator, the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA), will further reform to cut red-tape and focus on implementing the new registered training organisation (RTO) standards, which begin in January 2015.

From mid next year, the work of the 12 Industry Skills Councils will move to a more contestable model for the development and maintenance of training packages.
