Election Coverage – Week 3

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Opposition Leader, Bill Shorten and their respective teams were on the streets talking to people across the country again this week announcing a number of election policies and commitments each party will deliver on if elected come July 2.

A number of policy announcements have been made this week by each of the major political parties in the lead up to the July 2 Federal Election. In the lead up to the Brisbane City Council election held on 19th March 2016, Lord Mayor Graham Quirk announced the Council’s commitment for a “Brisbane Metro” Subway System; a reliable high-frequency transport system that will reduce CBD bus congestion, cut travel times and allow for the redirection of buses to improve services in the suburbs. This $1.54 billion commitment, proposes a mixture of new underground tunnels as well as transforming the existing South East and Inner Northern Busways from Woolloongabba to Herston and into the CBD.

Leader of the Opposition, Tim Nicholls, today announced his new Shadow Ministry following last week’s LNP leadership change.

Newly appointed Deputy Leader, Deb Frecklington, will take on the Shadow Portfolios of Infrastructure, State Development and Trade and Investment while former Shadow Minister for Transport, Scott Emerson has been appointed Shadow Treasurer and Shadow Minister for Small Business.  In addition to his role as Opposition Leader, Mr Nicholls will take on the Portfolios of Arts and Major Events. 

Former Leader, Lawrence Springborg has been left off the LNP frontbench, however has been appointed as the Chair of the Parliamentary Crime and Corruption Committee while former Deputy Leader, John-Paul Langbroek has been given the important role of Shadow Minister for Health and Ambulance Services as well as Shadow Minister for the Commonwealth Games.
